Early Roots
Long before modern development, the land that is now DeKalb County was home to Native American tribes who thrived on its natural abundance. The area’s forests, rivers, and wildlife provided essential resources and pathways for trade and travel.
In 1837, DeKalb County was officially established and named in honor of Baron Johann de Kalb, a German-born hero of the American Revolution. The county’s early settlers were drawn by its fertile soil, freshwater springs, and central location within the state—making it ideal for farming and trade.
Life at Center Hill Lake Today
Today, Center Hill Lake continues to balance its historical roots with the energy of modern rural living. Smithville, the county seat, hosts the renowned Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree and Crafts Festival each July—a celebration of bluegrass, Appalachian culture, and handmade art that brings thousands of visitors from around the world.
Nature lovers flock to Center Hill Lake and Edgar Evins State Park for boating, hiking, camping, and fishing. Scenic overlooks, wooded trails, and peaceful coves make Smithville a hidden gem for outdoor recreation year-round.
Locally-owned shops, artisan markets, and family farms thrive here, supporting a growing culture of creativity, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. Smithville offers a slower pace of life that’s deeply rooted in tradition—but always looking ahead.
